How-To: Emily Blunt’s French Braid Bun

Need some chic summer updo inspiration? How about this celeb-approved French braid bun from Founder of the Beachwaver and celeb stylist Sarah Potempa (@sarahpotempa)?!

Sarah whipped up this style for her stunning client Emily Blunt for Monday’s NYC premiere of her new film "A Quiet Place." The horror flick co-stars Emily and her husband John Krasinski (who’s also a former client and longtime friend of Sarah’s!). Paired with Emily’s strapless velvet Oscar De La Renta gown and ruby Lorraine Schwartz earrings? It was a red carpet style to die for ;)

Check out the behind-the-scenes photos below, then follow Sarah’s tutorial to recreate Emily’s red carpet style!

1. Apply a volumizing spray, and loosely blow-dry, directing the hair upward.

2. Using the Beachwaver Coast Pro, take small sections around the hairline, and smooth the root upward.

3. Smooth the hair back using the Mini On Set Pro Brush, and separate into three sections.

4. French braid down by following the mantra “Right over the middle, left over the middle,” adding hair from the root each time. Repeat until you reach the nape.

5. Secure with a clear elastic, then roll the braid under and pin it at the base.

Get the Look: Fishtail Half Up

Add a spin on the classic half up hairstyle with Fishtail braided strands, and beachwaves - simple, classy, yet unique.
Before the braiding begins, grab your Beachwaver Pro to add those beachywaves.
Half Up Crown Braid:
Step 1: Grab a small portion of hair on the right side of your head and separate into two equal sections.
Step 2: Pull a skinny strand from the left section, and cross that strand over to the section on the right. Then pull a skinny strand from the right section and cross that strand back over to the left section.
Step 3: Repeat, pulling strands from opposite sides, until your fishtail reaches the ends of your hair. Hold braid in place with a bobby pin while you braid the other side.
Step 4: Recreate the braid on the left side of your head with another small portion of hair.
Step 5: After both braids are completed, merge the two and finish with a regular three strand braid.

Get the Look: Fishtail Braid Bun

Fishtail braids are the perfect way to spruce up your everyday hairstyle. Don't let the intricate look intimidate you from trying it out for yourself!

Classic fishtail braid:

1: Prep damp hair with a flexible mousse, like Aussie Sprunch and Leave-In Conditioner. Gather all your hair over to one side of your head, and separate your hair into two equal sections on that side.

2: Pull a skinny strand from the left section, and cross that strand over to the section on the right. Then pull a skinny strand from the right section and cross that strand back over to the left section.

3: Repeat, pulling strands from opposite sides, until your fishtail reach the ends of your hair. To create a fuller, messy style, lightly tug the braid, tugging pieces outward to loosen them.

Fishtail bun:

1: Weave a classic fishtail at the nape of your neck.

2: Coil it into a bun, and pin in place with hairpins.

3: Spritz on light-hold hairspray.

The Half Up on Campus

What better way to start a Friday then with hot coffee and a cute 'do! My friend Bailey and roommate Sylvia are testing this theory. Cold and rainy weather is approaching here in Cincinnati, Ohio and these girls know just what it takes to overcome the harsh weather ahead.

The Half-Up is a major time saver. Within seconds, their hair is transformed from bedhead to chic perfection just in time to make it to their 9 am classes. A great addition to this look includes headbands, bows, and even cute clips. When the temperature becomes unbearable, keep rocking the do with the addition of earmuffs.

My friends pair their unique hairdo with their fab fall apparel and favorite Starbucks drink. What more could a girl want? May your Friday start out this fabulous too!
